It is more than just a competition bringing people together to the Mardi Gras Dog Cluster at the Alexandria Riverfront Center this weekend — it is just the love of dogs.
Kandee Bishea came from Johnson City, Texas, to show her 9-month-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi named Gordi. Not only are shows a fun hobby, but they allow her to help others become responsible dog owners.
Like many others at the show, Bishea breeds her canines herself. Coming to shows connects her to new families for puppies in her litter that she does not plan to keep.
"We're happy if we get one showdog out a litter," she said. "The rest go to pet owners."
Bishea is used to hearing, "Look, Corgis are so cute, I want one!" and she said she feels a duty to educate anyone who is seriously interested in one of her dogs.
She said most people do not know Corgis are smarter and shed more than the average dog.
"Corgis shed twice a year," she said. "From January to July and from August to December."
That may be a problem for some people and not for others.
"This is a great place to come and talk to owners," she said.
Andrea Adams and her three daughters Sofia, 9, Anastasia, 8, and Olivia, 5, spent all day Thursday and Friday at the show to do just that.
The family is thinking about getting a dog, and Andrea wants to make sure her girls know what they are getting into.
"Now that the kids are out of diapers, we can finally spend the time to be responsible dog owners," she said. "So we wanted to see them up close and personal."
She said the girls have been begging for a furry friend for quite a while.
"I just wish I had a dog so I could run around the rink," said Sofia.
"I want it to be playful," said Olivia.
Andrea wanted to talk with handlers who have the dogs' best interest in mind.
"There's a lot of responsibility that comes with having a dog," Andrea said. "It's nice knowing you're around people who love dogs just as much as you do."
Andrea also has had some help from Anastasia who got a dog encyclopedia for Christmas.
"She daily reports to us which one is a good family dog," Andrea said. "We've been bombarded with facts."
Anastasia said there is one very important lesson the book has taught her.
"Not all dogs are the same," she said.

"The handlers have been super nice," Andrea said, adding they offered to answer any questions and let the girls pet the dogs.
Bishea said said the best thing anyone in the Adams' situation can do is attend a dog show and talk to breeders like herself.
"Tell them I like your dog and ask when they are going to have a litter," she said. "Just watch what goes on here."
The public is welcome to come out and do that this weekend. The Baton Rouge Kennel Club wrapped up it's two days hosting on Friday, and the Alexandria Kennel Club will host Saturday and Sunday.
"Now we get to enjoy the rest," said Carl Grotton from the Baton Rouge Kennel Club.
The "Best in Show" and "Reserved Best in Show" winners of the Baton Rouge show have been named.
On the first day, Best in Show went to a Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Reserved Best in Show went to a Shih Tzu. On Friday, the winner of Best in Show was a Red Doberman Pinscher and Reserved Best in Show was a Brittany Spaniel.
