HACKENSACK — A Mahwah man driving a BMW was issued summonses after he fled the scene of an accident, struck another vehicle and smashed through a cemetery fence, knocking over several headstones Thursday morning, authorities said.
Eric Lynch, 29, was driving northbound on Hackensack Avenue when he ran a red light and hit another vehicle heading eastbound on Temple Avenue at the intersection around 10:15 a.m, according to city police.
Lynch continued driving north when his BMW hit another car at Hackensack Avenue and Devoe Place, and careened through the fence at St. Joseph Cemetery, police added. Several headstones were upended in the wreck.
City firefighters extricated Lynch from the BWM and he was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, authorities said. The driver of the first car he hit was also taken to the hospital.
Police said Lynch was ticketed for failure to keep right, running a red light, leaving the scene of an accident and careless driving.
