BMW has updated the 2014 5 Series with a new diesel engine, revised styling, and a higher-performance version of the M5 sedan. All the updated 2014-model-year cars arrive in dealerships this August.
The changes start with new lines around the BMW 5 Series' signature kidney-grille nose; reshaped lower air intakes; an extra crease in the rear fascia; slimmer, more angled taillights; side mirrors now with integrated turn-signal repeaters. Adaptive HID headlights become standard across the range, and full LED headlights are a new option for the 2014 model year. Inside, chrome adorns the display for the iDrive infotainment system, and the center-console cubbies and cupholders are larger. The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo model also gets a smidge more cargo room thanks to changed interior panels. For all cars, there are new upholstery, paint, and wheel design choices.
Under the hood, BMW will continue to offer the 528i with a 240-hp, 2.0-liter turbo-four engine and the 535i with a 300-hp, 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six unchanged. The 550i sees its twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engine upgraded from 400 hp to 445 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. New for 2014 and exclusive to the sedan, however, is a 535d model with a turbodiesel engine. The 3.0-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder produces 255 hp and 413 lb-ft. It will be offered both in rear-wheel drive and xDrive all-wheel-drive. Fuel economy figures have yet to be determined, but they should be better than the 28 mpg combined offered by the 528i gasoline model. It will probably go on sale a little bit later in the year than gas-powered 2014 5 Series.
Other tweaks for all versions of the 2014 BMW 5 Series include retuned suspension, with standard air suspension for the Gran Turismo; a coasting mode that disconnects the drivetrain to save fuel when decelerating; reduced aerodynamic drag; an updated version of the BMW ConnectedDrive infotainment suite; and the latest version of iDrive.
Pricing for the 2014 BMW 5 Series sedan starts with the 528i at $50,425 (including a $925 destination charge). The 528i xDrive is $52,725, the 535i is $56,025, the 535i xDrive is $58,325, the 535d is $57,525, the 535d xDrive is $59,825, the 550i costs $64,825, the 550i xDrive is $67,125, and the ActiveHybrid 5 is $63,325. Those represent price increases of about $1000 compared to 2013 models. As for the Gran Turismo model, the 535i GT costs $60,925, the 535i xDrive GT is $63,225, the 550i GT is $68,825, and the 550i xDrive GT costs $71,125.
2014 BMW M5, M6 Gain Competition Package
The 2014 BMW M5 performance sedan receives all the same tweaks as other versions of the 5 Series. The most notable addition is that, from July, BMW Individual will also offer four new paint colors for the car: Pyrite Brown, Frozen Blue Metallic, Cashmere Beige, and Nutmeg.
The M5, as well as the BMW M6, also receives an optional Competition Package meant to celebrate the racing legacy of the M GmbH division. It bumps the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engine's output by 15 hp, to 575 hp, shaving 0.1 second from the claimed 0-to-62-mph time (bringing it to 4.2 seconds with a manual and 4.1 seconds with the dual-clutch transmission).
New springs and dampers lower the car by 0.4 inch, while stiffer anti-roll bars are said to improve handling. The Active M Differential has been reprogrammed for improve traction, the electric power steering has been adjusted for "more direct" feel, and the stability control system has likewise been tweaked to allow sportier driving before it engages. The 2014 BMW M5 and M6 Competition Package stands apart from other models thanks to unique 20-inch wheels and black-chrome exhaust tips. Pricing for the 2014 BMW M5 and 2014 BMW M6 has yet to be announced.
